circulation fan will not shut off S40-V40 2001

I have a 2001 S40. As the weather got cooler here, I noticed a problem I did not have last Spring. When I start up the car, I have no control over the fan speed for the defroster. I realize that when the fan speed is set to Auto, it controls the fan speed automatically, but usually that speed can be overridden by the fan speed control button. Now, if I turn the fan speed control to "0", the fan still runs on high. Do I have a bad switch or thermostat? It's no big deal, just one of those annoying little things.
