Friendly tip for CV joints V70-XC70 1999

I used silicone spray regularly on the boots and various rubber bushings on my 1981 BMW 320i, and I did not have any rubber problems for about 15 years. Finally the ozone and temperature extremes exacted their toll. Recently I read in the new BMW owners' manuals to not use silicone spray, but I'm not sure why silicone is supposed to be bad. There are real expensive rubber dressings from Wurth and other companies, but I don't know where to buy them. In retrospect, I think cleaning the rubber parts with soap and water may have been the best preservarive.
