1998 s70 with 96K miles, a belt tensioner has finished off my engine S70 1998

My 1998 s70 has a blown engine per the dealer becuase the belt tensioner failed. I had the drive tran belt changed at 70K miles but not the tensioner.

Volvo does not recommend changing the tensioner until 105K miles.

Has anyone ever heard of this before. The dealer wants $4,000+ to fix the engine.

Any help or ideas ? I am tired of riding my bike.
