Tailgate latch won't always latch. 850 1996

Hey Jim,

You probably need a new latch. I put up with ours malfunctioning for years. I ended up replacing it because the tailgate just didn't open one day. Of course it happened while we were on vacation. The problem ended up in the wiring harness - not in the tailgate latch afterall, but I'm still glad we replaced that latch. I hated always slamming the trunk. Slamming is probably what wrecked my wiring harness come to think of it. This problem was exaggerated by cold temperatures and as you say, it just wouldn't close at all. Any temp below freezing, we just avoided opening the tailgate at all. This isnt practical living in the Northeast. I tried cleaning and lubing the mechanism - neither worked.

New latch cost about $150-$200 installed. It looked easy enough to do yourself if you're handy.
