s70 gas lid stuck S70 1998

my gas lid release doesn't work half the time ('98 s70t5), and naturally i was frozen shut today in north carolina at a balmy 25faren. i used to own an 850 '96 that had a manual release behind the trunk carpeting. i removed the s70 carpeting and couldn't find the release. where is it?
