problems with '98 V70? V70-XC70

Yeah, stay away from AWD and turbo to keep maintenance costs down. Get full maintenance records with the car, AND have it checked out by a Volvo specialist shop.

Also keep in mind, that a V70 in that mileage range is going to have quite a few items that need replacement in the near term, Here's what you might expect

prices are approx and assume you will not be doing the repairs yourself
ti-rods $500 (both sides, inner and outer)
control arms $600
t-belt $350
cap-rotor-wires-plugs $200
rear tailgate trim $ $100
ABS Module $140 for rebuild, or $600 for new
Heater core $450

In short, even if the car checks out, expect to put about $1500-2000 into it within the first year, and keep in mind pretty much any car is going to have issues at 70-100k mile mark. For my money, I would recommend Volvo any day, as they are fun to drive, safe, and are stylish!
