Transmission failure V70-XC70 2000

I was accelerating to get into traffic when the flashing arrow and check engine lights came on. My dealer tells me I need a new transmission after only 55,000 easy miles. I have never had to replace a transmission in 45 years of car ownership.

I thought this was a reasonably good car. On delivery the gas tank indicator wasn't working and it took a few days to repair. At about 50,000 miles the electronic switch for the windows needed replacement. We inquired about a shudder which seemed to be transmission related at about 35,000 and were assured there was not problem--were not advised to change transmission fluid as recommended in some threads.

Have others had transmission failure? Have you had problems with transmission after experiencing the shudder? Should I get rid of this car after the replacement--i.e. am I likely to have other drivetrain problems.

My previous Volvo was a much simpler vehicle and went 170,000 miles without major or minor failure.

I'm not very happy with this vehicle.
