Well,

I decided to have the transmission replaced. I did the front brakes and a few other things while they were at it and left the shop for $3500. Ouch! But I couldn't walk away from the car yet, and it's still worth ~$5500, so I can net a couple Gs. I am going to try to sell it now - it's just been too many repairs this year (total of ~$6k spent this year), much more than a car payment would be.
