Keys S70

As you now realized, your aren't just purchasing keys. You are purchasing a key, a software download, and someone's time. To put it into perspective, I just purchased a couple of keys for a customer with a 2002 S60; basically...the same key. I haven't billed her out yet because I couldn't complete the downloads (WSDA, the server for the downloads, was having problems), and I can't seem to find my reciepts (other people file for me) but I seem to remember the keys costing around $40.00 or so. The downloads are $30.00 (key won't work without a download). Therefore, two keys and one download would cost me appx $110.00. The average "parts" mark up I believe is around 50%, making the average bill $165.00, and then you have to pay the tech who took the time to hook up the battery charger to the car, set the car up in ready mode, read and clear any codes that may hinder the download, sit at the computer, order the downloads, and watch and make certain everything works like it should, and then check the keys after the download is complete. Easily a half an hour. My labor rate is $65.00, so the labor charge would be $32.50 (I usually do the downloads though; VADIS irritates the guys more than it does me). So, were I to do the same at my shop, where my mark up is a bit less than the norm, the cost would be appx. $182.75 (assuming a $40.00 per key price). The dealer isn't really too far from that.

The remotes are all right around $90.00 new, and these also need a download to work, $30.00 for the download.

Hope this clears the air a bit.

Chris
