The distance restriction for towing is due to the lack of lubrication for the transmission parts that are moving inside the transmission when the wheels are turning and the engine is off.
Sometime ago, in an RV magazine I saw an ad for an electric pump for the transmission. The pump is installed in line with the trans cooler line and it keeps all moving parts lubricated while the vehicle is being towed.
The pump is powered by the RV through a new type (7 prong?) trailer connector.

Obviously you need to do a lot of research on this option and make sure the manufacturer advises of its use for your particular Volvo.
