Few ?? from a new XC user V70-XC70 2001

We just bought a 2001 XC w/ 58k (I still have my '94 850) Runs great so far. I got a 3 year 36k warranty with it, and want to take care of any issues that arise prior to the warranty running out. My wife has been driving it, though i too it to work today and I noticed two odd things that I would like to investigate.
1- At slow speeds, when the car is turning (into a driveway for example), I hear a "whirring" noise seeming to come from the tranny. Is this normal for an AWD car (never had one, only 4wd)?
2- During acceleration between say 4-=60 mph when I nail the gas pedal and it shifts down (rpm approx 3000), the car vibrates (I can feel the vibration on the gas pedal, my coffee mug vibrates, etc.

What are symptoms of the dreaded Viscous Coupler/bevel gear failure?
Thanks
Willy
