MAP SENSOR IN QUESTION

Hi" In a gas injected car when a MAP(MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE)SENSOR is disconnected before starting , the engine starts, right!,but when i disconnect it while engine is running the THE ENGINE SUDDENLY DIES*, why is this so??,
other sensors dont show up this kind of behaviour, hope you shall answer my query , i shall greatly appreciate any suggesstions u give
