XC 90 T5 AWD gas mileage XC90 2005

I bought a 2005 XC90 T5 AWD about a month ago. I've been averaging 12.7 mpg despite driving with a "light" foot once I noticed the abyssmal fuel consumption. I called the dealer and he chalked it up to "break-in." Is something wrong with my car or is the claimed 17 city mpg just an optimistic estimate? What's the usual actual mpg that everyone is seeing for around-the- town driving?
