Tranny Code 322 850 1995

It's happened twice now, about 3 weeks apart. Flashing up-arrow + check eng lite + limp-home mode (both times immediately cleared by pulling over to the side of the road and shutting off the engine, waiting 10 seconds, and 'rebooting'; everything then functioned OK but lights remained on).

Each time, immediately before it occurred, I had manually downshifted to 3rd at 45~50 mph as I was descending a hill just as the car was coming up to temp. The first time, I had not perfectly matched revs, but this 2nd/last time I had.

Each time I retrieved 3-2-2 and no other code.

The 1st time, the flashing up-arrow plus check-engine light remained on.

The 2nd time, the flashing up-arrow went away after just a few restarts but the
check engine light remained on.

NO mechanical symptoms.

I guess it's time to replace what's known as a PNP switch? Is there any good way to adjust/compensate for slop/wear in the shifter linkage cable? Or should I just repl the switch as long as I'm in there, even if such an adjustment/compensation is feasible (say, at the other end of the cable)?
