Engine light S40-V40

Hello All,
I drive an 2001 s40 and I was wondering if anyone knows what brings on the engine light comming on. I'm aware of the gas cap senario where the rubber seal isnt on right ... but It just bothers me that this light comes on and I have to shell out money at the garage for them to tell me something stupid. I read earlier that there is a way to reset the service light. Is there a way to reset the engine light and wait for it to come on again to verify that the problem that I have is a real one and needs to be addressed and not some stupid gas cap senario again. Or is there a certain amount of time the car needs to be running in order for the engine light to be diagnosed by the computer and turned off ? like I never drive the car more that 45 mins any direction and wondering if I need to take it for an extended drive to get this light off , or just shell out ( again ) to get this annoyance turned off...
