Used remote entry fobs 850 1996

I just bought a transmitter fob off ebay and it was claimed to work for a 1996 or 1997 850. It was a new Volvo unit that included programming instructions on a Volvo card and batteries both tested good at 3.07 VDC. The lock/unlock button by the headlight switch works fine but after trying the the programming sequence several times, I could not get the remote opener to work. The www.keylessride.com site did not list 3 types of transmitters for a 1996, and only showed the picture of the same style unit I purchased? I saw your posting of the 3 different style receivers and transmitters. Where is the I.D. on the transmitter?
