Could just be the antenna wire - mine has an intermittent connection right where it plugs into the radio. If I pull the radio out and wiggle the connection it comes back on, but it won't stay on. My next step is to try a new antenna wire.

For some reason the AM works as yours does - it may use the shielding on the coaxial wire as its antenna.
