transmission operation- new rules 850

The transmission in my car is settling into atypical reproducible behavior. Instead of shifting gears when first driving the car in the morning, or after its been sitting for the entire workday, the transmission will not engage into the second gear, but will allow the rpms to rev past 3,000 in first, and on 4,000rpm+. Of course the car at this point will not exceed 20 mph. However, shifting the car out the D position, and into the 3 position will result in the transmission shifting just fine into second and onto 3rd gear as programmed, and allowing normal course of driving. Once reaching hwy speeds I am still in 3rd, and shifting to D does not invoke the transmission into 4th. Not yet anyway. Once the car tranny has warmed up, about 8-10 minutes of driving, the transmission will engage the 4th gear, and all is well again.

The question is: is the transmission just old and I will need to continue this abnormal driving procedure each morning? Or is there something else??
