850 engine interchange 850 1997

I have to replace an engine in a 97 855 non turbo automatic. As I shop, people keep referring to cars with 6th and 7th VIN digits "5". Obviously significant....how? My car's engine was 855882. How do I know that another engine...and from what years or what range of serial numbers (engine or VIN) will work? I have my eyes on two engines. Neither are from '97's and I'm worried about sensors and harness connections.

Thx,

DS

3 245's, 240, 855, various Datsuns. Dogs, hamsters, kids--but none of them have overhead cams.
