early downshift when coming to a stop, starts in wrong gear or clunks in from 'neutral' 850

1995 850 turbo 120k miles, atf flushed regularly. My eyes hurt from reading so many PNP posts, I can't find anyone else describing what my transmission is doing. No faults, no flashing arrows. Upshifts great. When I drive leisurely teh transmission can keep up with downshifting at stop and starting in first. If I drive hard and stop quickly I can feel 2 downshifts while decelerating, then car is an apparent neutral and clunks in gear after RPMs rise. The very overworked question here, Im sorry, Is this PNP related? OR Throttle Position Sensor or Transmission Solenoids? The latter two I know nothing about.
