code P0420 - Catalyst system efficiency below threshold S40-V40 2000

My check engine light has come on a couple of times over the last 3 months or so. The code is P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency below Threshold (bank 1) Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be causing this code to come up?
