My a/c compressor cycles on/off really fast 850 1993

I'm just wondering why my a/c compressor cycles on and off like every 3 seconds or so. It seems to me that at an ambient temp of around 82F, the compressor would need to stay running more continuously to keep the a/c blowing cold air. The a/c system does take several minutes to cool the interior down. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.
