Discoloration on Driver's lower door panel - what? S80 1999

I've got a white slightly sticky spot on the lower panel of my '99 2.9's
driver's door just below and ahead of the window switch panel (Taupe color).
It's been growing slowly for a couple of years now.
I tried to clean it off a couple of times but to no avail.

I've just realized that this is where my knee often hits the door panel when I'm driving (left foot back against the front of the seat). Apparently, the panel color is a thin surface treatment that's been worn away by the rubbing of clothing against it, and the underlying plastic is white.

Am I right? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any solution for this
other than total replacement of the door panel ( I've taken it off, everything
is welded together )? Does anyone else think that this is a rather poor method of construction? Is this another example of the inferior durability of "soft touch" plastic surfaces?
