87 is the minimum required S40-V40

According to my owners manual 87 is the minimum required by Volvo. So there will be no damage or harm done. The engine management system adjusts the ignition timing back to accomodate the lower octane.

That said, 91 is the optimum for performance (power and gas mileage) according to Volvo. Because of the 2mpg drop and a little less pep I could feel from the engine, I'm sticking with high octane.

Run 2 or 3 tankfulls of each. Measure your mileage and decide what works best for you.
