Most of those lights were activated by mercury switches.

The toxic waste disposal problem lead to virtually all manufacturers eliminated under-hood lights.

Maybe someone will develop a reliable ball & saucer or plunger type switch to use in under-hood applications.

You can get a great worklight for less than $10.00US at Home Depot.
