Hanegan--Klaus is right. You don't say what year your 850 is. On all the 850's the cabin air filter located outside under the plastic cover over the firewall was an option. You don't have to take off both windshield wiper arms to check. Just remove two or three of the fasteners on the passenger side of the black plastic cover, life it up and peer back inside on the passenger side. If you don't see anything, order both the plastic filter holder and the filter that fits on the top. There are two kinds of filters--regular white and charcoal activated. The charcoal is the best. It stops you from puking inside tunnels and when a car passes you with its catalytic coverter out. When you order, tell Volvo parts you want the carbon filter and the holder. The carbon filter was released for the 70 series, but both holder and filter will fit the 850 no problem. It's a no-brainer job installing or replacing both. If you take the windshield arms loose, note that there are two tiny white spots in the glass where the tip ends of the blades rest, and this is so you can postion them again when you reinstall. You will have to disconnect two drain tubes from the underside of the long plastic cover stretching across the top of the firewall if you want to remove it completely. Look closely at the two drains on either side. Mine plugged up from leaves and the like. Make sure the tubes are open before reinstalling the shield. Don't get paranoid about removing the black plastic cover and the half-inch wide piece of molding that it tucks into and the windshield. The molding is not glued in to the windshield or cover, and easily pulls loose. Take both the cover and mouldling out and give your windshield a thorough cleaning with a really good glass cleaner, not your Windex variety, but the kind with the salad dressing consistency that you have to scrub and use a bit of elbow grease with. Ditto the edges of the blades with the cleaner. Sunlight fracturing on a film covered windshield is a genuine road hazard. Dick
