Under dash Squeak S40-V40

My 2000 S40 just turned over 80K miles. It's been a pretty good car. My biggest expense so far was a rear calipar that failed. Anyway, my biggest annoyance is a squeak underneath the dash. If I jiggle the plastic air register, it makes this metallic squeak (I used to think it was something in the engine since it squeaks over every bump). I have wedged some fabric under there, but the squeak usually comes back in a day. Is there something metal that attaches to the air registers that may have come loose? If anyone has looked under there before, please advise. I don't have a shop manual, but think maybe it's time.

Thanks
Erik
