AC problem 850 1994

I've got a 1994 850 turbo wagaon with 145,000 miles. I've had it for 75k. The AC was recharged about a year ago and worked fine. However, a month ago, it stopped responding to control inputs, whether I turn the AC on by turning the climate temp dial down to the lowest or turn on the defroster. With the windows down and the car running, I couldn't hear anything for a while, meaning the compressor did not turn on at all. I checked the fuse and it was fine. Yesterday I finally heard the compressor turn on for about 2 seconds and then shut off. It waited for a few more seconds, then repeated on, then off.

Do you know what the issue could be? I'm afraid it's a dreaded compressor failure but wonder what else could it be. I've not had any AC problems until now and according to its history, the previous one owner did not either.

Thanks,
-Daniel
