As with any used car, its reliability depends on how well it has been maintained. I have owned a '95 850 since it was new (currently have 125,000 miles) and have found it to be just as reliable as my '89 740. I am very careful about routine maintenace. I have only had a couple of unexpected problems that turned out to be common problems with the 850s and not related to maintenance:
Replaced the A/C evaporator (common problem on these cars) ($800)
Rear main engine seal leaks. ($700)
Cruise control plastic hose under the battery can develop a hole. (minor repair)
Replaced a wheel bearing hub on one of the front wheels. ($400)
Minor problems with interior plastic trim (typical for Volvos)
Other problems that are reported to be common but I have yet to experience:
-Transmission problems - these are reduced if the transmission fluid is replaced regularly.(The '93 and '94 models had more problems than the later ones and Volvo does not have fluid changes in their maintenance schedule)
- Some components of the ABS brake system can leak and fail.
- Brakes need a lot of attention (just like my 740)
Make sure that the timing belt is changed every 60,000 - 70,000 miles. Unlike the 740, the 5 cyl engine is an interference engine and a broken timing belt will destroy it.
I have found that I could do most of the same repairs on the 850 that I could do on the 740, but its a little more difficult and the parts are slightly more expensive. I have a good local independent Volvo mechanic that I depend on for the more difficult repairs(like suspension repairs, rear main seal, and the evaporator.)
Many people on the brickboard would probably advise you that, if you have a choice, try to find a later model 850 '95 - '98 with good maintenance records, but a well maintained '93 could be a reliable car.
