Octane Requirement for 98 S70glt S70

Are there any ill effects to the engine or catalytic converter if one uses 87 octane (regular) in a 98 S70GLT. The owners manual talks about using high octane for performance enhancement, but if you rarely engage the turbo and don't floor the car will it hurt to use regular octane 87. jim
