A/C compressor Still won't run. Hot-wire it? 850 1995

Even without a picture, it wasn't hard to figure out which is the low-pressure cut-off switch. With engine running and A/C supposedly turned on, I jumpered the dangling switch connector. I heard a (relay?) click when I did so but the compressor still was not running.

I disconnected the white barrel connector under the spring clip on the front of the A/C compressor and hooked a voltmeter to it. With A/C turned off, and engine running, and low-pressure switch bypassed, I can watch what voltage is sent to the compressor clutch when I turn on the A/C. The damped needle swings upward (it's on a 30 V scale) to maybe 6 V and immediately falls back down.

With engine not running, if I run 12V from the battery to the other side of that connector (which measured ~ 2 ohms to ground), the A/C clutch engages with a solid clunk.

So, before I risk forcing the compressor to run by hot-wiring the clutch, to try to add refrigerant, I thought I'd see if anyone with experience can help shed some light on what I'm up against.
