98 70 series fuel pump in a 96 850? Problems? 850

Friend of mine has a 96 850 turbo wagon that quit dead on him in downtown Spokane. He went off to a wrecking yard and scored a fuel pump out of a 98 V-70 with 61K on it. He installed it in the 850 and it would not pump a drop. He said the bottom of the 850 pump was different from the V-70, as well as the connections. Is this one of the so-called 120 changes Volvo made between the two models? He jumpered the old pump and the car started and ran for a moment or so, and then died and refused to start. Don't know if he tried replacing the relay or not. Any info on the interchangeability of the two fuel pumps appreciated. Dick
