Instrument Dash lights not working 850

Basically just commiserating because I know how freaky it is to drive at night without the instrument cluster lights/dash lights.
I am sorry not to be of any help, but I am also having problems with my dash lights going off but then they go on again....off and on...sometimes flicker. My car was in a shop last week and I couldn't let them attempt to fix it since I was already spending $1400 for oil leaks etc.. He said it would cost at least another 1.5 to 2 hours in labor to pull the instrument cluster out to see it there is a loose connection. They aren't even sure that is where the problem is originating from.

I think it was Klaus who suggested that it may be in the dimmer switch. Tapping the switches ...headlights or dimmer...makes no difference. Also have tried fooling with the key...no change.
