Half shaft replacement tips needed 850 1995

On bay13 I found a well written procedure for replacing the wheel hub bearing:
http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/FWDbearingHub.php

It seems like replacing the half shaft is mostly a subset of this procedure, but I have a few questions that are not specifically addressed as I do not plan to replace the hub using a kit as mentioned, which includes an axle nut and some other things.

So, once the control arm is detached and the axle is knocked inward to release the axle from the hub (the axle has enough travel to do this?), what is the next step? Will simply pulling the axle release it from the transmission? Should I replace any other parts, such as the 36 mm nut? Any tips would be much appreciated. It looks like this may be a fairly easy job, but I am a beginner at half shafts.
