I find the 850 approach a bit too subtle. I have to listen closely for the click, and sometimes sun reflections and ambiient noise make it hard to confirm quickly it has been locked. For some reason my remotes work only when pretty darned close to the car, so maybe Volvo engineers thought I would be right next to the car when using it, making audible of visible indicators redundant. I can use my VW remote from 20 feet and tell what is going on. Of course, I like driving my Volvo better :)
