Some codes will clear themselves if the problem has not returned after several engine cycles, like the loose gas cap. Other codes will be stored but require multiple code combinations before the CEL is turned on.
Your best bet is to have the computer read, and all outstanding codes cleared. That way, when the CEL turns on again, you will know that the code is fresh.
