Rear Main Seal 850 1996

For non-turbos: keep your flame trap clean-make sure that the small plastic line from the vacuum tree to the flame trap housing is not clogged and make sure the large line from flame trap housing to the oil-vapor separator (oil trap) is not clogged.

My rms went at 85k due to excessive crankase pressure (clogged line from vacuum tree to the flame trap housing). This is a two dollar cure (new plastic hose and two rubber connectors).

I do not know why the rms leaks in a turbo. I suspect that the the oem rear main seal in all 850s was inadequate. My volvo tech friend told me that the replacement seals (a $25 item) are much more substantial than the originals. I expect that all rms will enventually wear out and leak however it should be at 150k or ten years of age, or more, not at 85k.

Conclusion: There are two problems at work here: excessive crankase pressure and poor original equipment rear main seals.

Dan
