850R turbo boost and steering 850

Hi all,
I have two questions about my 'new' 96 850R wagon. First, I am not sure how far the turbo boost guage is supposed to go into the 'white zone.' Mine only goes about one third of the way into the white, and I can't really feel the turbo kick in at all. Second, I have some play in the steering wheel and can hear and feel a clunk when going over potholes which sounds like it is coming right from the steering column. Do the steering column universal joints often wear out? Can they be serviced? The Haynes manual suggests to check for U-joint wear, but how exactly would I do that? Dare I ask how much one might cost to replace? Thanks, Jeff
