Klaus is right, we need the code to help you out. Get an ODB sensor reader and post the code.

From your description, you said that you are using more gas which mean you are perharps running rich on your fuel ratio. As such, the O2 sensor is function properly that there is something wrong with your fuel to air ratio. Is your idling rough, black smoke coming out of the exhuast, lack of power etc?
