Buying advice please: 850? V70? What to look out for?

My wife is now hesitant to take our 740 turbo wagon (172k) on long trips without me, which is not a good thing. It's been a good car, but it's beginning to need repair with some regularity. As much as I love it, I really don't want it to leave her and my kids stranded. I like to do maintenance work, but don't like having to fix the car because it's broken.

I'm considering selling my '03 pickup truck and buying another Volvo Wagon for the family.

I can spend up to $10,000 or so (less being better, of course, but want I want is value: I want to drive the new car for many years to come).

What are the differences between the 850 wagon and the V70?

Any years to avoid? Is my price range reasonable? Can I get a decent wagon for $8000? How many miles would you feel comfotable with on a used 850 or V70?

I know this is a collection of general questions. Please feel free to chime in with whatever wisdom you have. I'm very familiar with the 740, but know nothing about the FWD models (I'm assuming they have the quality and longevity for which Volvo is known?!).

FWIW, I may keep the 740 for myself, or may try to find a cheap used small pickup for a few grand.

Thanks, as always, oh wise Volvo gurus,
mrad
