Rear shocks for 1999 V70 V70-XC70 1999

OK, The rear shock on my Volvo are SHOT. Went into Volvo parts to get a pair and was told that they cost 400.00 + each. Well, after getting up off of the floor after fainting, I told them I would have to get back to them.
I know a lot of parts for this car have been expensive, but this is a regular old shock. They say it is self-leveling, but not worth 400 bucks.

Have any of you out there been able to substitute regular shocks for these. They look just like regular shocks to me and my Cousin, a Chrysler certified mechanic that does my repairs. Am I stuck with paying 800 for shocks?
