Good job, the 223 codes translates to "Throttle Position Too Low". Running your gear shifter through the gears a bunch can help clean the contacts in the Gear Position Sensor (GPS) but it will do nothing for a TPS. The TPS is replaceable and it is located on the side of the throttle body. Under the hood you should have a plastic cover that is held on by one screw and you can see where the throttle cable goes into the back side of it. It is under this cover that you will find the throttle body and switch. Look here for a picture of that cover. http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/ftrap.php
Here is a nice shot of the throttle body as well, the throttle switch is mounted on the outboard side of it. http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/egr.php
Truthfully I have never had call to replace a TPS on a white engine. I believe they are a simple sensor and just bolt right up with no adjustment but I do not know this for a fact. Take a look at it and see if there are slotted adjustment holes where the screws go through. I looked through Vadis and found replacement instructions for everything else you can imagine but not the TPS.
Take a look in sockets A2 and A6 and see if you have any codes there as well. The TPS signal is used in a few different systems so if you are coding in one system often times you will code in the others as well. If all else fails you could check the sensor signal for drops outs or opens. Or pay to have someone do it for you as it takes a good multimeter and preferably an oscilloscope to do it right.
I just looked at WorldPac and they show a list price of 83.32 and the holes in the sensor are round, not oblonged. I imagine it would be a simple bolt up. If you decide to change it out yourself then I would get a throttle body gasket as well and simply remove the throttle body and give it a good cleaning while I had it out to change the TPS.
Good Luck, Mark
