If the 740 isn't as bad a you're indicating AND you can do the work yourself, defintely fix that rather than buy a newer, far costlier to own Volvo. My 745T is now 20, 260K miles and I'm planning to keep it yet another 10 yrs. They really don't make cars like that anymore.
Stay far away from any AWD Volvo unless you like parting with lots of money.
