That mysterious black box... S80

On my 2001 S80 2.9, there is a "black box" that is bolted to the engine, directly behind the dip stick tube. It's about 7" tall and 3" wide, rectangular in shape. There is a hose coming out of the engine block that goes into it so I assume it's part of the PCV system.

Can someone confirm what this black box is, what it does, and tell me whether it requires servicing. My owners manual says there is some sort of filter in the PCV system that needs periodic inspection/cleaning. Is the filter in that box? If so, how do you take it out to clean it?

Any info much appreciated. Thanks.

G Squared.
