Wacky Water temperature gauge 850 1994

A few days ago a problem arose. The temp gauge started acting randomly. It would be at normal, then jump up to the red and right back down again. It's progressed to just pegging itself at the top of the red as soon as you turn on the car in the morning and it stays there at all times. Because of the rapid flucuations and the fact that the car hasn't blown up yet, I was able to surmise that the car isn't overheating.

It isn't throwing any codes for a faulty sensor. It looks like a problem I've had with a 240 --the temp. compensation board on the back of the insrument cluster. Also, the electric fan runs all the time.

Any ideas as to what the problem actually is and how to fix it?

Thanks a bunch,
