Cool;ant odour in the car 850

Winter (if we ever get any rain) is creeping in.
I switched the heat on and a coolant smell was being omitted from the heater thru the vents.
I checked the level and yep the level was reaching min.
I topped up and three weeks later the smell was still there and yep it was obvious there was a leak inside the heater core or hoses but after removing the side cover (near my feet ) i noticed there was an overflow tube under the plastic core covering, running outside, which meant if there was a leak it was either too slow to show or it would just go out thru the tube(good safety precaution) i couldnt see anything obvious.
Is there any one with any knowledge or experience or as to why or how I can fix this mess as it looks to be a big job in reaching the heater core .Has any one any experience or know how or has this happened to anyone else
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanx in advance
