Alternator S70 1998

My 1998 S-70 with about 110K mileage recently started illuminating the alernator light at low RPMs. Light usually goes out when the car is going 20 mph or higher. The battery seems to start the car OK. I suspect that I will need to replace or repair the alternator soon. The Haynes manual suggests that new brushes on the alternator can be less expensive than replacing the alternator. Has anyone tried this or should I just replace it with a rebuilt one.
