Driver Information Module S80

I just got a 1998 2.9 SE Auto. Very nice car, got it cheap though cause it had a couple of problems, one of which is:

The driver info module (small info panel towards the left hand side of the dashboard display) doesn't do anything. It just stays black all the time.
I've tried playing about with the buttons on the indicator stalk but none of them do anything, the screen just stays black.
All other steering wheel related functions (indicators/wipers/cruise and radio buttons) work fine, so I assume the info module buttons WOULD work too, but since I can't see anything on the panel I don't know...

I also tried disconnecting the battery for an hour to let any modules reset, etc... and that didn't help.

It almost seems as if the screen itself is faulty... I dont suppose there's an easy fix or some way to test it? Any ideas greatly appreciated :-)
