Cooling fan 850

Posted a message before but it went off on a tangent. The 2 speed cooling fan only ever runs one speed & I think that it's either the temp. sensor or the fan relay but neither are cheap & the car is, so I want to get it right first time. The 2 yellow & yellow/white wires to the relay have a constant voltage of 12v when nothing is happening. When the fan comes on, only the yellow wire has voltage but both red wires from relay to fan motor have 12v. Does any one no what is supposed to happen at both speeds? If the relay is fine I'm going to assume that the temp. sensor is telling the ECU porkies.
