rusty tail pipe 850 1996

Scottkay--The tailpipe endpiece that Volvo stuck on the end of their turbo's looks like hell (excuse my French) after a few years of driving. I just bought a 97R wagon with only 48.9K on it, and the tailpiece was already starting to rust. I own two 97 wagons, an R and a GLT (which is in Norway), and on both of them I sprang for the twin stainless steel exhaust tailpiece that Volvo sells--not cheap at about eighty bucks. The first one I bought only cost sixty, but that was four years ago. The stainless steel tailpiece with its slightly upward flare really adds to the looks of your vehicle. Doesn't make it look cheap like some of the chrome boom cans you can find out there. Don't know if you're up to spending eighty bucks or so on a polished piece of stainless steel. Go down to a Volvo dealer and ask to look at it first though before making up your mind. Might make you think otherwise. It is really a substantially made piece of equipment. If you do buy it, make sure you mount it right. When you take the old one off, you will notice a slight bulge in the exhaust pipe where the single bolt held the old one on. It's about an inch or so wide. When you slip on the new twin-pipe stainless steel, make sure the clamp centers on that very slight bulge when you tighten it down with a 17mm wrench. If you look at the recess in the plastic bumper where the tailpipe shows, you can see it was made for the twin-pipe attachment. Cheapest place for Volvo parts I've found to date after owning and running Volvo's for thirty plus years, is Volvo Houston, 1-800-468-0041. They are a lot cheaper than Groton or some of the other places that sell genuine Volvo parts. Dick
